post-tute relief

Today, being Friday, is the heaviest part of my week. By which I mean, I have a tute (Oxford-speak for 'tutorial', a discussion of this week's essay with my tutor and invariably one or two other students at most) at 9am. Tough. But if that weren't bad enough, I also have a lecture at 11am. Damn this accursed timetabling.

I'm sure you're all moaning and gnashing your teeth at what an easy life I must have - do have, in fact. In my defence, however, I did have exams last term, so I'm entitled to a bit of a break, and anyway, as from next Monday, I'll have 2 essays a week, pretty much every week until Finals. So there.

Anyway, to return to the point. Our lecture on the structure and purpose, and their interrelation in Pindar's epinician odes (just because I don't have much work doesn't mean it's easy) complete, I cycled home at some speed to avoid being thoroughly drenched. A lazy lunch, followed by a brief interlude involving a discussion with my housemate Dan on threesomes (a discussion prompted, I should add, by a magazine article, and not simply curiousity.. or so he would have us believe, I'm sure) and a visit from local lovelies Adam and Alice, completed the first half of my day deliciously.

And so I set to baking.

I love baking. I hope I've made this clear, as it's going to come up again and I'd hate for you to get bored with it. I've just made a chocolate swirly traybake (currently lacking in icing) and as I type, chocolate cupcakes are in the oven. I've got a bit of a cunning plan for these so we'll have to see how that turns out, but I'm fairly excited about it! Depending on the relative success of both (either) ventures, one will be coming with me to a birthday party 'Aishtravaganza' this evening.

If I remember, and if I'm not too drunk, I'll try and take a picture for you all.

Drinking (erroneously but appropriately I just typed 'drunking') is the general theme of tonight/the early hours of tomorrow, as it is May Day. All over the rest of the world, this is marked by people in no particularly special way, but here in Oxford the custom is to stay out all night, then throw yourself off Magdalen Bridge in the morning. Well, that's a brief summary; I think there's a bit more to it than that. As I'm supposed to be on a bus to go rowing at 8:40 I doubt strongly that I'll stay up for the full shenanigans.. but many will. I leave their plight to your imagination..

An explanation

Dear all/any

I've at last made the move from blog.de (not sure why I was there in the first place, if I'm honest) to a recognised, English blogging site. Whether this will affect the quality, quantity or frequency of my posts, I'm not sure.. but it might fill me with a new lease of enthusiasm to let the world know what I'm up to, if nothing else. So yes, it is a perfectly selfish move. You may soon come to the conclusion that much of what I do is. But if you're still reading, then you either don't hold this opinion because you're my friend, or you don't hold this opinion - yet.

Anyway. I suppose I should give you the lowdown. This blog is mostly going to be my rant-page, but I shall aim to at least relate it to its (if I may say so) rather witty title.
In case you hadn't got it, here's why it's witty:
1) I like Romans, being a Classics student and all
2) I live in Oxford (or rather, I study in Oxford. Just for the record, I actually 'live' in Cambridge. Oh, the irony)
3) I do like a little bit of a wander from time to time, of the real and thought-related variety
4) If you say it right, 'Romans' sounds a bit like 'romance', and I'm a hopeless romantic. Interestingly enough.

Sadly, my wit did not flow long enough for me to encompass all my passions in one cunningly-title blog, so you'll just have to take as read my passion for baking, rowing, Greek, Jane Austen and tea parties.

Here's to a long and happy relationship with my new blog, and all you lovelies who are going to (I hope) read it. Amen.
